Right Reverend Tong, delivering a sermon during Sunday church service in Tamale titled “The new man or woman”, said baptism must be a necessity for Christians.
He said the Bible’s account of baptism indicated that one could only enter the kingdom of God when baptised, which meant to be born of water and the Holy Spirit.
He said being a Christian was all about being born again and that was achievable through baptism through which an old life of pride and wickedness must give way to humility and kindness.
He referred to John chapter 3:5-6, which stated that “flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit”, to buttress the relevance of baptism.
Right Reverend Tong noted that it was through baptism that Christians received the Holy Spirit to become adopted children of God, adding that baptised people were expected to live life anew to the glory of God.
He encouraged Christians to get transformed as baptised individuals to emulate the life of Jesus Christ, saying “We are called to follow the example of Christ’s life.
That is why we are called Christians, people who have dedicated their lives to live for Jesus.”
