The West African Examination Council (WAEC) honoured two Ghanaian Senior High School graduates, Alex Opoku Manu and Benjamin Eyram Nana Kwame Degbey for topping the 2022 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The two students from St. James Seminary SHS clinched the first and second positions, while Nigeria's Ogidigbo Chioma Blessing took third place.
The graduates received their awards at the 71st Annual Council Meeting of WAEC in Gambia.
Their performance out of the five countries that took the examination earned them accolades.
Ghana Education Service (GES) celebrated the boys' achievement in a Facebook post.
Dr Eric Nkansah, the Director-General of GES, and Father Owusu Sekyere, the Headmaster of Opoku Ware School, represented Ghana's delegation in The Gambia.
Additionally, the honoured duo represented St James Seminary in the 2022 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
The boys outperformed GHANASS and Kumasi Sec Tech with 44 points in the quarterfinals.
They then faced contest favourites Presec Legon and Kumasi High School in the semi-finals, where they were defeated after a fierce battle.
Subsequently, Alex Opoku Manu is studying medicine at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Benjamin Eyram Degbey is pursuing Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Academic City.
