Mr. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, has revealed a towering “fountain elephant statue” in the Bono Regional capital, symbolizing the resurgence of the ancient industrious spirit of the “Sunyanis.”
Funded by Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh and Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the MP for Sunyani West, the construction of the impressive elephant statue was completed, and strategically positioned to welcome visitors to the capital.
The inauguration coincided with the pre-burial and funeral rites (Dotoyie) for the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, the Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, where hundreds gathered to pay their final respects over the weekend.
Mr. Ameyaw-Cheremeh reiterated his dedication to elevating the development of the area to new heights.
Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Queen mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, explained that the statue honoured the late paramount chief and encapsulated the life story of the Sunyani people.
She fondly remembered the traditions and culture of the Sunyanis and paid tribute to the late Nana Boahen Korkor I, a renowned hunter and the town's first chief, whose hunting prowess in elephants transformed Sunyani into an economic hub.
Nana Brayie applauded the two MPs for financing the project and acknowledged their significant contributions to the development of the Sunyani East and Sunyani West constituencies.
Equating the elephant spirit of the Sunyanis to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Brayie highlighted an “eternal bond” between the NPP and the Sunyani people.
Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, the Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Area, praised the visionary leadership of the Sunyani Queenmother, lauding her initiatives as inspiring.
Mr. John Ansu Kumi, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, alongside a diverse group of mourners, attended the statue's inauguration.
Nana Nkrawiri II, known in private life as Christian Kwaakye, served as a retired educationist and became the Paramount Chief of Sunyani on March 17, 1980. He passed away in July 2023 after a brief illness.
