How do you identify the best business directories in Ghana to help boost your company’s online presence? Which directories still have value? This post will help you to understand how business directories work, and how you can select the best.
It’s worth noting that this list contains some old and very established names, and a few amazing new kids on the block. We have sites on this list that are as old as the internet in Ghana.
What is a business directory?
Typically, a business directory is a platform of local businesses and companies indexed in alphabetical or by industry. This means that the listings can be sorted into various parameters based on location, address, size, business age, industry, and many tags.
In other words, you can browse through a list of hundreds of businesses within the same niche on a good business directory. The social media platforms that offer some kind of directory listings like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and even Google, do not offer this functionally. In our opinion, this is the main reason why local business directory websites like ghanayello.com and yellgh.com are still so relevant in local business aggregation and digital marketing.
Ranking Criteria
We have endeavored to order the sites based on the following parameters:
- Popularity: How much traffic the site receives
- Ease of use: Availability of a user dashboard or listing management system
- Mobile-friendliness: This looks at some core web vitals on the site and the sites display on various devices
- Features: It should be noted that some of these sites are not dedicated business directories, so the number of essential features available to business owners may be limited. For instance, some of the sites do not offer a clickable business websites link
- Pricing: Some of these sites, like Google My Business, are free listing directories, others are fully paid, while others offer free and paid listings.
- Mobile App: This looks at the availability of an accompanying mobile application. Facebook, Instagram, and YellGh, for instance, have mobile apps for both users and business owners.
- Domain Authority: The website’s domain authority estimates how high the site is likely to rank on search engines.
- Backlink type: For search engine optimization purposes, we are also interested in whether you can get a do-follow backlink to your website to help boost your own website’s ranking.
- Site Traffic: Another prime consideration is how much traffic your website can get from the directory.
Best Business Directories in Ghana
1 Google Business Profile
What was just a maps location has now become an amazing business directory. what makes Google My Business (now Google Business Profile) such a useful resource is that with a Google My Business account, you get more than a business listing. Your free business profile lets you easily connect with customers across Google Search and Google Maps.
GMB is typically a local business directory, and that means, you may not be able to gain increased visibility outside of your main service region unless you are already an established name online.
Another downside is that GMB’s algorithm is not as advanced as Google Search, so it is very difficult to dominate the search rankings besides getting quality reviews and ratings.
Lastly, verifying your GMB account can be quite challenging if you do not have a functional postal address linked to your profile. This becomes an issue, especially in developing countries like Ghana where our addressing system is yet to be properly developed.
With all that said, you should make every effort to set up and verify your business on Google My Business since its benefits are so many.

A simple way to test the strength of a directory
A simple test you can conduct to know how effective a platform is is to select a couple of listings from that platform and perform a simple google search for the main title of the listing. Then see where the listing ranks. You would need about 3 listings for this experiment, because newly posted listings may take a while to rank well.
Then also, you must be aware that premium listings would likely rank higher than free listings.
