The new chief succeeded his brother Chire Ibrahim Mahmoud Bancey II, who was enstooled on June 25, 1995, as the Bissa Chief of Tema and ruled for 26 years until his death on October 23, 2021, at age 73.
The enstoolment event at the forecourt of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly in the Greater Accra Region was held concurrently with the 40th Day Dua according to Islamic tradition of getting a replacement just as the final funeral rites are conducted for the dead.
The enstoolment was per Bissa tradition, which involved broader consultations and was endorsed by the Greater Accra Council of Bissa Chiefs, chaired by the Regional Chief, Mohammed Ali Dabre III.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Chire Bancey III thanked the people, elders, and other stakeholders for the trust reposed in him and pledged to promote peace and unity for the development of the Bissa communities and end deviant behaviours among some of the youth.
He noted that the area was endowed with many companies and would lobby some of the companies to employ the youth in the area to reduce unemployment.
He promised to engage stakeholders to tackle the sanitation situation in the area and advised residents to respect the customary practices and culture of the landowners.
He promised to implement responsive and accountable governance to allow all key stakeholders to work together toward a new era of prosperity for the Bissa people.
The new Chire pledged to establish a scholarship scheme for brilliant but needy Bissa students in Tema and its surrounding towns while making skills acquisition and farming more accessible to help the youth.
Mr Suleman Bancey, the spokesperson of the Chief, explained that the new chief has proved beyond measure to be a good leader and that the Bissa council was in of him.
He said the Bissa community looked forward to seeing development under the new Chief.
Mrs Ayisha Fuseini, a resident of Tema Community One, said, “We have never known him to be a man with bad behaviour, he is kind, God-fearing, and loves everyone”.
