The Sogakope Circuit Court has sentenced 20-year-old Eyram Botwe to 15 years imprisonment in hard labour for attempted robbery.
Botwe sprayed pepper powder into the eyes of a motor rider, the complainant, to enable him to rob him of his Haojue motorbike at Agorve.
He admitted attempting to commit robbery and was subsequently incarcerated.
Mr Isaac Addo, delivering his judgement, took into consideration the fact that the convict was a first-time offender.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Elizabeth Effia Tenge earlier told the Ghana News Agency that Botwe attempted to rob a Haojue Motorbike from a commercial motorbike rider at Agorve.
She said Botwe, who was the pillion rider, was arrested on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, by members of the Agorve Community after spraying the pepper powder into the eyes of the rider causing both the convict and the complainant to fall to the ground.
Botwe then attempted to escape with the motorbike abandoning the complainant to his fate.
DSP Tenge said Botwe had engaged the services of the rider to convey him from Akatsi to Agorveh and on reaching a section of the road near Agorveh township, he carried out his nefarious act.
She said shouts for help by the victim (complainant) attracted the community members who came to his aid and arrested the convict.
She noted that there had been similar attacks by thugs lately, using the same modus operandi in the region and urged commercial motor riders to guard against such situations, adding that the recent arrest by the Akasti District and subsequent sentencing would stem the tide.
