The national amateur boxing team of Ghana, known as the Black Bombers, is gearing up for an exciting opportunity to compete in the International Professional and Amateur Boxing tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. The tournament, scheduled for June this year, will see the Black Bombers facing off against their counterparts from New Zealand.
Mr. Dauda Fuseni, Vice President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), revealed that the aim of the program is to provide an avenue for boxers from both countries to hone their skills and prepare for upcoming international boxing events. While the main team is set to participate in the second World Boxing Qualifier for Paris 2024 in Thailand, a reserve side comprising promising young boxers like Mohammed Aryeetey and Abu Kamoko will seize the opportunity to compete in New Zealand.
Highlighting the significance of international exposure for Ghanaian boxers, Mr. Fuseni emphasized the need for continuous participation in such tournaments to enhance the skills and experience of the Black Bombers. He commended the team's outstanding performance at the 13th African Games, where they clinched four gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, reaffirming Ghana's stature as a boxing powerhouse.
“We need the exposure; our boys are good, but they lack international exposure and experience,” Mr. Fuseni remarked in a media interview. He stressed the importance of seizing such opportunities to compete against top-level opponents and elevate the profile of Ghanaian boxing on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Mr. Fuseni emphasized the Black Bombers' commitment to qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, underscoring the importance of maintaining Ghana's legacy in the sport. With determination and support, he expressed confidence that the Black Bombers will continue to make strides and represent Ghana with distinction on the international stage.
