Sunyani, Bono Region – Mr Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani East, has submitted his nomination to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary, expressing his commitment to retaining the seat in the upcoming 2024 elections. Due to internal challenges, the constituency missed the initial parliamentary primaries on January 27, but with issues resolved, the primaries have been rescheduled for March 9, 2024.
If successful in both the primaries and subsequent parliamentary elections, Ameyaw-Cheremeh will serve his constituency for the fifth consecutive term. The MP, also the Board Chairman of the Bui Power Authority, is facing stiff competition from Mr. George Kumi, Ghana's former envoy to Nigeria under former President John Agyekum Kufuor's government.
Speaking to the media after filing his nomination forms at the Party's regional office in Sunyani, Ameyaw-Cheremeh expressed confidence in the primaries, stating, “I trust my delegates, and they also have confidence in me.” He urged delegates and supporters to maintain decorum during the campaign, emphasizing the internal nature of the primaries.
Ameyaw-Cheremeh called for unity among Party members, highlighting the need to capitalize on the achievements of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's government to secure victory in Election 2024. He emphasized the exemplary performance of the President and Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, positioning the Party for success in the upcoming elections.
As a strong NPP stronghold in the Bono region, Ameyaw-Cheremeh advised Party members to prioritize unity, bury individual differences, and present a formidable front to secure not only the Sunyani East seat but also widen the vote margin in the Presidential ballot.
Mr. Kofi Ofosu Boateng, the Bono Regional Secretary of the NPP, received the nomination forms and commended both contestants for their proven track record. He urged informed decision-making among delegates and called for a clean campaign without insults to maintain Party unity in the constituency and the region.
Boateng expressed optimism that either contestant could lead the Party to maintain the Sunyani East seat and urged supporters to avoid actions that could disrupt internal unity, potentially jeopardizing the Party's chances of victory in the constituency.
