Drivers at the Tema Station bus terminal are awaiting directives from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the mother body of all transport unions, before increasing transport fares.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, drivers expressed their inability to unilaterally adjust fares without clear guidance from the GPRTU.
Mr. William Ansah, a driver commuting from Tema Station to East Legon, disclosed his intention to raise fares due to recent fuel price hikes. However, he explained that his union chairman advised him to await instructions from the regional union before making any adjustments.
“I wanted to increase the fare, but my union chairman asked me to wait for the regional union before increasing any fare. We are spending huge funds on fuel, so we expect the union to bring a favourable fare for us. The new fare they want to bring must absolve the challenges for us,” Ansah remarked.
Similarly, Mr. Benjamin Attah, who drives from Tema Station to Adenta, expressed eagerness for the unions to provide guidance on appropriate fares. He noted that relying on the mother union for fare directives has been the convention over the years.
While some drivers await directives, it was discovered that drivers from other transport unions, including the Cooperatives Union and the Concerned Drivers Association, have already adjusted their fares.
