For customers that live in a complex, share a dish, have XtraView, or have the decoder connected to multiple TVs, we recommend consulting a DStv Accredited Installer.

We recommend the use of a DStv Accredited Installer for all installations. You can find your closest one on dstv.com/InstallMe. All installations include a 12-month guarantee on equipment and a 3-month guarantee on workmanship.

Customers moving from an existing Explora model will not need to make any changes to their installation.

They can simply unplug the older Explora and then plug in the DStv Explora Ultra (making sure to use the HDMI cable and power supply packaged with the decoder).

Data charges apply when the DStv Explora Ultra is connected to the internet. Although a capped connection may be used for limited streaming, we recommend an uncapped connection (due to the volume of data consumed when streaming), with line speed based on the customer’s viewing requirements.

A minimum 2Mbps is recommended for SD downloads; for SD streaming, a minimum of 4Mbps; for HD streaming*, a minimum of 10Mbps (plus connection to an HD capable TV); for 4K streaming*, we recommend checking the requirements of the individual content suppliers (plus connection to a 4K-capable TV).

The DStv Explora is packaged with the new A9 remote (together with batteries). This remote is a universal remote and can also be programmed to control other audio/video equipment like your TV.

Although we recommend using the A9 remote (packaged with the decoder), remote controls shipped with all Exploras are compatible.

No. The apps available on the DStv Explora Ultra are automatically added based on agreements between DStv and these service providers. When customers connect this device to the internet, all available apps will automatically be displayed and be available for use.

There is no need to download the apps. Customers are not able to add additional apps and there is no “app store”.

The Explora Ultra has all the features of a satellite PVR and although it can be used without an internet connection, is best suited for homes with internet to allow users to also enjoy the benefits of value and choice that streaming and other apps provide.

It is suitable for :

1. Families looking to add PVR functionality to their homes and also wanting access to the depth of content offered by 3rd party service providers.
2. Existing PVR customers who want to add more ways of enjoying content as it is XtraView capable and can be linked to existing PVRs.
3. Households that cannot or need not transition completely to streaming, but want to enjoy streaming apps,
4. Customers who may have no internet connection yet but would like to buy an internet-capable device for when they have connectivity at a later stage.

Yes, the DStv Explora Ultra supports 4K streaming.

Some of the services will not require a separate subscription. For convenience, customers are able to add both Showmax and Netflix to their DStv accounts (and only make one payment a month).

No, any customer with an active DStv subscription and Access Fee will be able to access and use the 3rd party apps when connected to the internet. Separate subscriptions may be required for some of those apps.

Yes, customers will need to sign in to any app when using it for the first time.

Further use may require occasional sign-in (the need is however determined by each individual service).

No. Full use of this decoder, including access to the features available when connected to the internet, requires an active DStv subscription together with the monthly Access Fee.

The DStv Explora Ultra is an expensive, subsidised device for DStv customers to enjoy other services alongside their DStv subscription. There are many other devices and means of direct access to use 3rd party apps directly should a customer so wish.

Our existing Explora model will sell at a lower price point than the Explora Ultra. The Explora Ultra is our premium model with the benefits of streaming apps, 4K and Dolby Atmos capability.

The availability of both models offers our customers a choice when moving to a PVR or when adding another decoder to their home set-up.

Showmax works differently from DStv Catch Up. When you stream a programme on DStv Catch Up, it is saved to the hard drive of the DStv Explora and is available for you to watch again at a later stage.

All DStv satellite installations make use of an LNB (low-noise block downconverter). The LNB is the receiving “arm” that you see mounted on your satellite dish. It collects radio waves from the dish and converts these into a signal that your decoder can understand. There are many types of LNBs, ranging from a single LNB (used with our single view decoders) to quad LNBs and UniCable LNBs.

The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed and manufactured for DStv to meet the growing needs of our non-commercial installations. It is not suitable for Multiple Unit Dwellings (like complexes and apartments).

MultiChoice recommends the DStv Smart LNB for all DStv Explora and most XtraView installations (when installed in a Single Unit Dwelling, ie. where customers make use of their own satellite dish).

From a technical viewpoint, the DStv Smart LNB combines the features of a DStv Switch into a single UniCable LNB and offers a single-cable solution for the distribution of multiple satellite signals.

We launched the DStv Smart LNB with the LMX500 model, and in May 2016, will be replacing this with the LMX501.

Model LMX500 – has 24 user bands, 4 UniCable outputs and 2 Universal outputs.

Model LMX501 – has 30 user bands, 3 UniCable outputs and 1 Universal output

The recommended retail price of the DStv Smart LNB is R449. It is available via our Accredited Installers, MultiChoice Service Centres and DStv Agencies.
We recommend that all changes to existing installations, including the replacement of LNBs be done by DStv Accredited Installers. 

All our decoders can be installed with a DStv Smart LNB, however, some XtraView combos may require the use of multi-switches with a Quad LNB.  Please chat to your local DStv Accredited Installer for more info.

Although the DStv HD Decoder does work with a DStv Smart LNB, the recommended installation for a single view decoder is a single LNB and an 80cm dish.
You can select to do the installation with a DStv Smart LNB, however, there will be an additional charge for this. 

Only the unused UniCable ports need to be terminated (this is to prevent signal degradation). Termination must be done using the supplied 75ohm terminator. Three of these terminators (“caps”) are packaged with the DStv Smart LNB.

There is no need to terminate the Universal ports.

The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed for use in DStv installations where customers make use of their own satellite dishes.

The DStv Smart LNB has been tested locally with our decoders and other DStv approved equipment used in our installations.

MultiChoice has a new satellite that allows for high band transmissions. Our DStv Smart LNBs are a high band capable, ensuring that your installation is capable of receiving these signals.*

The DStv Smart LNB allows for a simplified and more cost-effective installation.

Multiple decoders can be connected to the DStv Smart LNB without the need for a multi-switch/ DStv Switch (resulting in a cost-saving).

The cable goes directly from the LNB to the decoder. This allows for a shorter cable run and for decoders to be in different rooms (currently, many are together in the same room as the switch). This allows for more flexible installation solutions (including the easier connection between HD decoders and HD TVs via HDMI cables).

If you use the DStv Smart LNB when installing one decoder, there is no need to change your LNB when upgrading to XtraView.

We recommend that all changes to existing installations, including the replacement of LNBs be done by our DStv Accredited Installers.

* Older decoder models (Dual View Decoder and the SD PVR) are not capable of receiving high band transmissions, even if installed with a DStv Smart LNB.

You can manually update the software as follows :

1. Press the blue DStv button
2. Go to Settings
3. Select User Preferences
4. Select General
5. Select Download the latest software (If this option is greyed out, the decoder is already on the latest software)

The performance of the Single View HD Device is directly related to the quality of the installation (including the use of approved equipment and correct alignment of the satellite dish)

The recommended installation for the Single View HD Device is a single LNB (it will however also work if connected to a twin, quad, UniCable™ or DStv Smart LNB). If this device is linked to another one using XtraView, a DStv Smart LNB is recommended.

Please note:
MultiChoice recommends the use of an 80cm dish for all installations.

If making changes to an existing XtraView installation, please DO NOT disconnect the cable that links the two existing devices until you have phoned MultiChoice and requested that the XtraView link between those two existing devices is broken.

The DStv Explora (Model 3B) is the decoder that will replace the DStv Explora (Model 3A) early in 2021. The DStv Explora (Model 2A) will at that stage, no longer be manufactured.

It is entirely manufactured in South Africa and has all the features customers have become used to – including up to 110 hours of recording space, DStv Catch Up, BoxOffice and Showmax. This model replaces the 3A and does not have different or additional features.

It is anticipated to be available in retail outlets as well as MultiChoice Service Centres and Agencies within the first few months of 2021.
