Two prominent members of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba, have called for the immediate suspension of construction and for a financial audit to be undertaken.
The call is based on the controversies surrounding the project and the need for transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people.
In a memo sent to the Board of Trustees on Monday, January 23, the two Bishops called for an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm to conduct an audit into the expenditures of the project and the overall cost of the project. The audit must take place before the deferment of activities of the Board of Trustees.
The Bishops also stated that the project should not continue until the economic conditions in the country have improved.
The National Cathedral project has been a source of controversy since it was first announced by President Akufo-Addo, with questions of accountability and concerns about the relevance of the project in light of the country’s economic crisis.
In August 2022, founder of the LightHouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills resigned from the Cathedral’s Board of Trustees, citing unresolved concerns about the cost of the project and other issues. His resignation letter, which was leaked recently, stated that his inputs, opinions, and letters about the project were ignored and trivialized.
