The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) is informing its customers and the public of an impending audit of all meters.

As such, the Company is giving a month’s moratorium effective June 07-July 06 to all customers to assist with the field survey, which will see the deployment of ECG officials to update customer information.

In a public notice published by ECG, the power distributor called on customers to report to their District/Regional offices, issues they (customers) might have which could be deemed as stealing of electricity, for rectification.

They include those with postpaid meters, but without monthly bills, prepaid meters without purchase of electricity credits, faulty meters, by-passing or tampering with meters thus, not paying full cost of power usage and engagement in any form of electrical illegality.

The notice warned that failure to report such issues within the one-month period would go against anyone who would be found culpable.

“Please note that after this moratorium, customers who are caught stealing electricity, which is criminal, will be charged with the offense of stealing in accordance with the law.

Their names shall also be published widely.”

The Volta Region Revenue Taskforce of ECG, which began an exercise to clampdown on activities of clients in arrears and those engaged in illegal power theft through surcharges has recouped more than GHC1.5 million to the Company.

The exercise, which began early this year, in its catchment areas across Volta and Oti Regions took the operation to households, hostels, hotels, cold stores, pubs, restaurants and government institutions, that owed the company to comply with settlement of debts or power terminated.
