Akatsi South: Do not enter the classroom -GNAT to members

Mr Prosper Agbeli, the Akatsi South and North Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has cautioned members to follow the directive of the union’s leadership.

“All actors in the educational sector involved in this strike action, especially our members, must comply with the order from our leaders.”

Mr Agbeli was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during a tour on the second day of the strike action embarked on by teacher unions across the country.

He said the move was the surest way to demand what was due them, and that “no headmaster or headteacher must be called under any condition to report at the post under any authority contrary to what their leaders had given.

Most public schools within Akatsi South the GNA observed were empty as pupils and students spent time with parents at home and in marketplaces due to the absence of the teachers.

A visit to the Akatsi Duawodome Basic school early Tuesday morning showed that pupils and teachers were absent.

Mr Emmanuel Dayie, the headteacher at Akatsi ARS Basic, said his school had recorded some pupils on campus but teachers did not turn out.

“My worry is the impact this will have on the final year BECE candidates but nothing can be done about it until they listen to our cry,” he said.

The leadership of all the various teacher unions in the Pre-Tertiary Education Sector embarked on a nationwide strike on Tuesday in response to the government’s inability to grant them a 20% cost of living allowance (COLA) amid the current high inflation rate, leading to increase in the price of goods and services, among others.
