Parliament mourns the passing of former MP Agnes Chigabatia

The of Ghana convened on Monday to pay tribute to the late Mrs Agnes Asangalisah Chigabatia, a former Member of (MP) for the Bulsa North constituency, who passed away on January 9, 2024, at the age of 67. Mrs Chigabatia, a stalwart of the New Patriotic Party () and former Regional Chairperson of the party, was remembered fondly by her colleagues and counterparts.

During the session, Mr. James Agalga, a Member of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (), highlighted Mrs. Chigabatia's distinguished tenure in the Parliament. Serving from January 7, 2005, she was known for her active participation and commitment to various parliamentary committees, including the Standing Committees on Gender and Children, Government Assurance, as well as the Select Committees on Local Government and Rural Development, and Trade and Tourism.

Mr. Agalga emphasized Mrs. Chigabatia's passionate advocacy for child protection, education, and , citing her forceful contributions to debates in the House. Notably, he recalled her unequivocal stance in 2006, advocating for the castration of individuals found guilty of defiling children.

In addition to her parliamentary duties, Mrs Chigabatia was actively engaged in international parliamentary associations, notably the Parliament and the /Ghana Parliamentary Association from 2005 to 2008. She also served as the Deputy Regional Minister from 2007 to 2008, contributing significantly to regional development initiatives.

Colleagues from across party lines paid tribute to Mrs Chigabatia's pioneering achievements and unwavering dedication to public service. Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, MP for Ketu South, expressed hope that Mrs Chigabatia's legacy would inspire future generations to uphold her principles and values.

Mr Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, MP for North, reminisced about Mrs Chigabatia's vocal advocacy and noted her role as a role model for young women, particularly from northern Ghana. Similarly, Mr Mahama Ayariga, MP for Central, recalled Mrs Chigabatia's intelligence, courage, and mentorship to new MPs.

In his tribute, Mr , MP for South, lauded Mrs Chigabatia's significant contribution to Ghana's democracy, particularly her historic election as the Upper East Regional Chairperson of the . He underscored the importance of vibrant political parties in strengthening democracy.

The Parliament concluded the session with a moment of silence in honour of Mrs Agnes Asangalisah Chigabatia, commemorating her indelible legacy and service to the nation.
