A cross-section of residents in Sunyani and its environs have called on the Forestry Commission to design a communication message to arouse the interest of Ghanaians in the Green Ghana Project (GGP) campaign to ensure success.
They said the success of the project could only be achieved if the populace made it their responsibility as individuals and groups to ensure seedlings already planted were well-nurtured.
They argued that efforts made by the Government and Ghanaians under the last two editions of the campaign would be fruitless if the seedlings were not well nurtured.
Government on June 10 this year marked the second year of the GGP campaign and more than 20 million different species of tree seedlings were earmarked to be planted across the 16 regions of the country.
In an effort to ensure that the trees planted were catered for, the residents called for a national effort to protect and sustain the seedlings for the nation to attain the intended success.
Some of them believed “the initiative is laudable” but has serious challenges such as apathy and the lack of patriotism and consciousness on the part of Ghanaians in supporting the desire in restoring depleted forests and reserves.
Mr Samuel Ntow a middle-aged man and Kwame Tetteh, a youth activist, therefore suggested the need for a pragmatic mechanism and process of nurturing the seedlings to maturity.
They said, “We must not leave the responsibility to the FC and the Forestry Services Division alone since individuals, groups and institutions did the planting with the officials of Commission serving as supervisory bodies on behalf of the Government on that occasion”.
