Mission Rabies, in collaboration with the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly and the Veterinary Service Department, has commenced free Mass vaccination against Rabies within the Municipality.

The Free mass rabies vaccination commenced on June 20th, and it is expected to end by July 31st within some selected communities within the Municipality.

The Kpone Barrier, Kokompe, Shangai, and the Kpone township have been designated for the Free mass rabies vaccination in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality.

Dr Emmanuel Kwao Pecku, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Veterinary Officer, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Kpone that there were reported cases of rabies within the municipality hence the need to undertake the exercise.

Dr Pecku noted that rabies could be 100 per cent fatal if adequate measures were not taken to curb the spread; “children were mostly victims of dog bites,” stressing that it was imperative for residents and people who own pets to make them available for the vaccination.

The Municipal Veterinary Officer revealed that most dogs within the municipality were stray dogs, which he said could be a contributing factor to the surge of suspected rabies cases within the municipality.

Dr Pecku assured the public that the only remedy to curb the rabies cases within the municipality was to embark on the Mass vaccination most, especially in communities where dogs and other pets’ bites are rampant.
