The Member of Parliament for Nbadam, Dr Mark Kurt Nawani, has expressed concerns that the government's current low resource allocation to the Agenda 111 project might lead to a completion timeline of twenty-one years.
The project aims to enhance healthcare facilities across the country and has seen a resource allocation of over GH¢189 million so far.
Dr Nawani, Deputy Ranking Member on the Health Committee, questioned the commitment of the government to completing the project before its term ends, given the estimated cost of GH¢17.5 million per facility.
In an interview, Dr Nawani stated, “It is obvious that the government has no intention of finishing the Agenda 111 projects. If you look at it, it will take 21 years if they continue to allocate this level of resources to it per year.”
He also criticized the state of progress on specific project sites, including his own district of Nabdam, where work is reportedly at the foundation stage and lacking visible advancement.
Recently, Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah announced that three contractors had been terminated for failing to meet standards during the construction of the Agenda 111 projects.
The Minister's statements came during a site visit to inspect the progress of the projects.
President Akufo-Addo commissioned the Agenda 111 project on August 17, 2021, with the aim of improving Ghana's healthcare sector.
The President emphasized that the project would create 20,000 jobs for health professionals upon completion and address the under-investment that the Covid-19 pandemic exposed in the country's health sector.
