Kumawu By-election: Future leaders willing to sell their future for GH¢50 – NDC candidate Kwasi Amankwaa

Kwasi Amankwaa, the Parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress () in the just-ended by-election of the Kumawu constituency, has opened up on how vote buying by the New Patriotic Party () affected his chances to win the poll.

Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express, Mr Amankwaa said in 's attempt to retain the seat, an amount of GH₵50.00 was distributed to electorates in the bid to get their votes.

“I met a few of these young people. There is a town called Banko in Kumawu and about six university students came up to me and said, ‘These people are giving money, we want to vote for you, can you match the amount they are giving to us'

“And I said, ‘I can give you more than what they are giving you but my conscience will not allow me to do that',” he told Aysha Ibrahim on Tuesday.

He indicated that the action of the tertiary students saddened him.

“This is the future that we are looking at. Our future leaders are willing to sell their future for 50 cedis,” he stressed.

The NPP successfully retained the seat in the Kumawu constituency.

NPP's Ernest Yaw Anim polled 15,264 votes representing 70.91% whereas candidate Kwasi Amankwaa came a distant second with 3,727 votes or 17.29 per cent.

Candidate Exposes Vote Buying Tactics in Kumawu By-election

Kwasi Amankwaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate in the recently concluded Kumawu constituency by-election, has shed light on the influence of vote buying by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the election outcome.

During an on JoyNews' PM Express, Amankwaa revealed that the NPP had distributed GH¢50.00 to voters in an attempt to secure their support and secure seat.

He shared a specific incident involving university students from Banko town who approached him, demanding a matching amount to what the NPP was offering.

Amankwaa stated that although he could offer more money, his conscience prevented him from engaging in such practices.

Expressing his dismay, he highlighted the concerning behaviour of young individuals who were willing to trade their future for a mere 50 cedis.

Despite the challenges posed by vote buying, the NPP successfully defended the Kumawu constituency seat.

Ernest Yaw Anim, the NPP candidate, received a significant majority with 15,264 votes, accounting for 70.91% of the total votes, while Kwasi Amankwaa secured the second position with 3,727 votes, representing 17.29% of the votes cast.
