One person has been shot dead and several persons injured in a shooting incident that occurred at Lameshegu in Tamale on Sunday, February 13, 2022.
The deceased identified as Abdul Hakim aged 24 was reported to have been hit by a stray bullet fired by the police but was later pronounced dead after he was rushed to the Tamale Teaching hospital.
According to reports, the police on their patrols allegedly stopped an unregistered Toyota Camry vehicle but the driver refused to stop, thus driving into the Lamashegu chief’s palace for refuge.
The Police then chased the driver into a palace, shooting him in the thigh. This act infuriated the Lameshegu youth and caused them to peddle stones at the police and burn lorry tires on the streets.
Meanwhile, the Police has interdicted six person’s in connection with the shooting incident. The interdicted officers are General Corporal Samson Kweku Darfour, General Corporal Prosper Mormesimu, General Constable Harrison Twum Danso (Driver), General Constable Nuhu Muntari, Constable Doris Serwa Bonsu and General Constable Mathew Sah.
A statement issued by the Director-General of the Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Kwesi Ofori said preliminary investigations into the matter led to the interdiction of the six.
However, a team of investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) together with the Police Professional Standards Bureau have been dispatched to Tamale for further investigations into the matter.
On the other hand, the Northern Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr Timothy Yosah Bonga would liaise with the affected families and offer them the necessary support in line with Police Regulations.
The Police further appealed to the people of Lamashegu and the entire Tamale Metropolis to remain calm as the investigation continues into the unfortunate occurrence.
The other injured persons are currently responding to treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue.
