Residents of Maamobi have poured out onto the principal streets of Accra to protest government’s plan to evict them from their current location in three weeks.

According to reports, the government has given the Mamobi residents a 21-day notice to vacate or be forced out.

The residents are, however, unhappy about the government’s timeline.

Clad in red and black garments amid wielding placards, the protesters marched on some major roads of the Greater Accra Region to drum home their displeasure.

Speaking to JoyNews, the residents said they need adequate time to move out.

According to them, they have spent all their lives in Mamobi, thus, they cannot just pack and leave the area in just three weeks.

“Twenty-one days is not sufficient. Please add more time so we can pack our belongings and evacuate the premise. My child is about to write Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), please give us time,“ one resident said.

Another added, “I don’t have anywhere to go.”

On his part, an assemblyman, Wisdom Boateng, also said they inherited their abodes from their forbearers.

“The land was given to us by our predecessors by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). So we have been on the land since 1967 up to date and we have even paid revenue to the AMA and the current Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly.

“We want the government to intervene in this decision because we are citizens. We can’t just use one week or 21 days to evacuate the premises.

“We have resided on the land since 1967, so we are not foreigners, we are Ghanaians. “So the state should have some patience with us. We can’t litigate with the state”, he pleaded.
