MTN ‘tickles’ Christmas babies in Ho: Ghana News

Mobile Telecommunications Network Company (MTN) has welcomed babies born on Day in the Municipality.

An annual ritual, the Company considers mothers who delivered babies on the day as sharing the labor of the cosmic birth, and the newborns as having destinies of historic significance.

“While we were celebrating , they were in the labor ward, and we want to put smiles on their faces” Mr. Mawuli Katahena, the Company's Lead in the Volta and Regions, said at the Teaching Hospital, where five successful births were recorded on the day.

The babies, three of which were males, each received a basketful of assorted newborn supplies, while mothers and health workers at the ward were congratulated and presented with airtime from the Network.

Similar donations were made at the Ho Municipal Hospital, where four babies, two males, and females had been delivered.

The Royal Hospital, a top private facility in the Municipality also had one Christmas baby, a boy, whose mother was congratulated.

Twins born at the various hospitals were welcomed too by the Company.

There were no Christmas babies at the Ho Polyclinic, and Mr Katahena noted a consistent fall in the number of newborns on the day in recent years.

Dr Ridge Adu-Ntiamoah, who was in charge of the maternity unity at the time of the visit, said the birth rates fluctuated, and that with growing education, the birth spacing would be receiving more attention.

The Doctor used the occasion to share some challenges with the working environment at the maternity unit of the Teaching Hospital and said space expansion to facilitate an increment of beds, and additional equipment would be needed.

Mr. Katahena said MTN was presently delivering on a commitment to improving health care and had a 60-bed mother's clinic ongoing at the Municipal Hospital, while plans had been confirmed for the construction of a direly needed center for the Ho Teaching Hospital.

He said with the Region's outlook as a major tourism destination, remote network access was being considered by the Company as a key input.

He said remote cell sites were being enhanced while 4G coverage increment and extension to towns and villages were also being pursued.
