Renowned anti-corruption advocate, Vitus Azeem, has called upon former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwasi Nyantakyi, to rethink his decision to contest in the upcoming NPP Parliamentary primary for the Ejisu seat.
The vacancy for the Ejisu constituency's parliamentary seat arose following the unfortunate demise of Member of Parliament John Kumah. Despite the absence of legal barriers to Nyantakyi's candidacy, Azeem emphasized the ethical dilemma surrounding his bid.
In an interview with Umaru Sanda on Eyewitness News, Azeem stressed that while Nyantakyi may not face legal impediments, the shadow of corruption allegations would cast doubt on his suitability for public office.
Azeem highlighted the significance of considering the implications of contesting the by-election, asserting, “No matter, whether he has been prosecuted or not it is a dent on him and it cannot easily be wiped away.” He urged Nyantakyi to reflect on the ethical dimension of his decision and its potential impact on his reputation.
Referring to Nyantakyi's involvement in the Anas investigations, Azeem underscored the lingering cloud of suspicion, suggesting that Nyantakyi's admission of offering money to prevent the airing of the expose further tarnished his image. He implored Nyantakyi to heed his conscience and refrain from seeking public office.
Azeem cautioned that Nyantakyi's victory in the Ejisu seat could resurrect concerns about corruption whenever he assumes government appointments in the future, emphasizing the long-lasting repercussions of his actions.
