The Somanya District Hospital, situated in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, is facing the imminent risk of losing electricity due to an outstanding debt of approximately GH₵1.4 million owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Ms. Irina Ofei, Director of the Ghana Health Service for the Yilo Krobo Municipality, expressed concern over the potential disconnection, emphasizing the critical role electricity plays in the hospital's operations and healthcare service delivery to the local community and surrounding areas.
The decision by ECG to disconnect the hospital from the national grid comes after repeated notices and warnings regarding the accumulated debt dating back to May 2022. Ms Ofei appealed to ECG for leniency, stressing the essential services the hospital provides to the people of Ghana.
She acknowledged the financial strain faced by the hospital and its inability to settle the outstanding debt immediately. However, she assured that efforts would be made to clear the debt, urging government intervention and support to prevent any disruption in healthcare services.
Ms Sekyiwaa Mensah, the Public Relations Officer of ECG's Tema region, confirmed the hospital's outstanding debt and the notice of disconnection issued to the facility. She reiterated that the hospital had not made any payments since April 2022, resulting in the substantial debt owed to ECG.
The notice served on the hospital provides a 14-day ultimatum for payment, failing which the facility will be disconnected from the national grid. Ms. Mensah clarified that this action is part of ECG's nationwide debt recovery efforts.
The situation underscores the urgent need for resolution and highlights the challenges faced by healthcare institutions in meeting financial obligations while delivering essential services to communities.
This is the real evidence that Ghana is ruled by a bunch of clueless bigots. Children can lead a nation with better results than this. No wonder some say Africans should’ve continued on in colonial rule
