The Police Service has revealed the reason behind the arrest of Accra FM presenter, Kwabena Bobbie Ansah on Thursday night.
Per a Facebook post from the Police, Kwabena Bobbie Ansah who is affiliated with the opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) was arrested over an alleged false news publication and offensive conduct at about 10 pm after he ended his show.
However, the Police did not disclose exactly what the false publication was and Bobbie’s offensive conduct. According to law offensive conduct is when you threaten, insult, or abuse people in public that provokes the peace of the country.
According to the Police, Kwabena Bobbie Ansah’s arrest “became necessary after he turned down several invitations from the Police to him and others involved in the case to assist with investigations.”
They further stated that the Accra Regional Police Command will issue a full statement on the matter in due course.
Meanwhile, the producer of the Citizen Show, which the presenter hosts, said Mr Kwabena Bobbie Ansah was picked up by persons purported to be National Security operatives on Thursday.
Speaking on the issue on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the Executive Director of Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Mr Sulemana Braimah said all must come together and have a big conversation about this arrest. He also said that Government and state agencies should act properly so the public can have trust in them.
Sources disclosed that the journalist was sent to the Nima Police Station after his arrest.
However, some supporters of the NDC had messed up at the Police station demanding the immediate release of the journalist.
In the second month of 2022 only, three journalists have been arrested. First Captain Smart was arrested for unsavoury comments on peace and security. Another journalist was also arrested and assaulted for filming Police officials at a local eatery in the Western Region. The arrest of Kwabena Bobie Ansah brings the number of journalists arrested to three.
