Mr Larbi David Agyarkwa, Senior Nursing Officer at the Mental Health Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital has called on organisations to prioritise the mental health needs of their employees to enhance productivity.
He said: “Mental health is the embodiment of total health without which there cannot be efficiency and productivity.”
HE expressed the need for organisations to partner with psychiatric units of health facilities for periodic examination of their staff to address their psychological needs.
Mr Agyarkwa, who stated this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale, noted that: “Most employees resort to self-medication to manage stress amongst other psychological needs, which further worsens their plight.”
He said: “When employers prioritise the mental health needs of employees, it will help minimise occupational hazards thereby contributing to the effective growth of the organisations.”
Mr Agyarkwa called on institutions not to underestimate their workers’ mental health needs, adding “A mentally stable worker makes a productive organisation.”
