The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed disappointment over the sudden reversal of the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy on petroleum products by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) issued a directive on April 4, 2024, instructing all Oil Marketing Companies and related stakeholders to impose a levy of 16 pesewas per litre on Petrol, 14 pesewas per litre on Diesel, and 14 pesewas per kilogram of Liquefied Petroleum Gas as a result of the levy's suspension.
Abbas Imoro, the Public Relations Officer for GPRTU, expressed concern that the reversal would further exacerbate the already burdensome fuel prices.
Imoro noted the surprising nature of the decision, highlighting previous efforts by stakeholders to address taxes affecting fuel prices. He emphasized that the GPRTU had advocated for the removal of certain taxes from the price build-up, and the suspension of the price stabilization levy was initially seen as a positive step.
However, the swift withdrawal of the levy within two days has left the GPRTU puzzled and disappointed.
