The ‘Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz' competition, an annual academic venture spearheaded by the College of Science, focuses on engaging basic school students in the exploration of science, mathematics, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Professor Mrs Dickson emphasized the broader objective of the competition, aiming to harness critical thinking skills among junior high students. The intent is to establish a robust foundation for science learning, underscoring the importance of scientific and mathematical concepts in everyday life
Ensuring quality education for the realization of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Four remains a top priority for KNUST. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the significant role of science and mathematics in enhancing students' self-confidence at the basic level.
This year's ‘Junior Science and Mathematics (JSM) Quiz competition boasts the participation of more than 200 basic schools from four regions – Ashanti, Greater Accra, Northern, and Western. The event is organized in collaboration with ERIDEC Ghana Limited and receives support from the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Prof. Mrs Dickson stressed the importance of nurturing the youth's imaginative, creative, and curious learning processes. This approach aims to equip Ghana's youth with the relevant skills, including technical and vocational expertise, by 2030.
Prof. Leonard Amekudzi, the Provost of the College of Science, highlighted the pivotal role of science and mathematics education in training students to develop problem-solving abilities. The College remains steadfast in achieving the objectives set for the ‘Junior Science and Mathematics Quiz.'
Prof. Kwasi Preko, Board Chairman for the JSM Programme, reflected on the success of the previous editions and expressed the organizers' vision to extend the competition's reach to the entire country in future events. Regional preliminary contests are slated for November, followed by the national contest in December this year, according to the established regulations.
