Mr Benard Quartey, the President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), says boxers in Ghana’s camp remain focused on securing medals at this year’s Commonwealth Games amid the failed drug test.
Ghana’s boxing camp was hit with a massive setback after Shakul Samed tested positive for a banned substance, diuretic and masking agent furosemide at the competition in Birmingham.
The Ghanaian Olympian was therefore suspended from the competition as he did not show up for the weigh-in, with his opponent Luc Jean Rosalba progressing to the next round.
Mr Quartey, in an interview, revealed that the failed drug test was a big blow to Team Ghana, but they have psyched other boxers so that they remain focused in their upcoming bout.
“There is so much noise in the media with respect to what happened to Samed. We came here as a team, which is part of the game. So we are managing the situation so that other boxers are not affected.
“We are psyching the other boxers so that they prepare for the bout ahead of them. I believe we will get more wins to propel us to win medals at the competition despite the mistake,” he said.
Team Ghana presented nine boxers at this year’s games, and Ghana’s only female boxer, Ornella Sathoud, suffered elimination in the first round stage of the middleweight division.
Ghana’s experienced boxer Wahid Omar beat his opponent Jamie Divine from the Isle of Manx to reach the Round of 16.
Another boxer Joseph Commey recorded a clean swipe of his Kiribati’s Betero Aaree having won 5-0 on points.
Other boxers including Yaw Addo Samuel, Lartey Jessi Lartey, and Captain Abubakar Kwasi would be looking to secure wins to aid their progress in their respective bouts.
