The Minority Caucus in Ghana's Parliament has issued a strong response to Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison's characterization of them as “hooligans” during the OccupyBoG demonstration.
The demonstration, organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its supporters, called for Dr. Addison's resignation over allegations of economic mismanagement and incompetence.
In an interview with international business website Central Banking, Dr Addison dismissed the protesters and stated that neither he nor his deputies would step down. He described the NDC's protest as “completely unnecessary.”
Reacting to the Governor's comments, Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, condemned Dr Addison's response, accusing him of arrogance and disrespect towards the Minority and NDC leadership.
Hon. Ayariga suggested that Dr. Addison's response reflected his frustration and inability to manage the Central Bank.
Ayariga warned, “He says we are hooligans, so we will show him what hooligans do,” and indicated that the Minority would meet with NDC leadership to decide their next course of action in holding the Governor accountable for what they see as his “incompetence.”
