Koforidua Technical University (KTU) recently held a groundbreaking international applied research conference accompanied by a technology exhibition.
The event sparked discussions on business incubation and strategies for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the post-COVID era.
This year marked the 12th edition of KTU's international applied research conference, sponsored by Kasapreko Company Limited and the Ghana Digital Centre.
With the theme “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the Post-COVID Era: The Role of Research, Innovation, and Technology Transfer,” the conference aimed to foster dialogue among industries, universities, and research institutions to advance national development.
Dr Samuel Kwofie, Director of Research and Innovation at KTU and conference coordinator, highlighted the university's pioneering efforts in organizing international conferences and setting an example for other institutions.
He expressed hope that the conference would recognize student organizations with high-tech products.
Professor David Kofi Essumang, Vice Chancellor of KTU, emphasized the significance of research in university education and its role in driving progress. He stressed the importance of investigating social problems, seeking solutions, and improving practices.
Regarding the conference theme, he underscored the need to develop new technologies that promote research and stimulate innovation, including renewable energy, automated systems, artificial intelligence, and robotics, which contribute to environmental sustainability.
During the technology exhibition, students showcased innovative projects that supported the post-COVID era. Uni Market, an online campus marketplace offering affordable products and services, was presented by Mr Jonathan Asante.
Bryan Opoku Mawunyo showcased Wattsmart, an initiative with built-in sensors to detect early flames in commercial and public spaces, facilitating prompt intervention.
Dr Winfred A. Nelson, Director of the National Development Planning Commission‘s Development Coordination Division, highlighted the challenge of integrating the SDGs at the national and decentralized planning levels in a sustainable manner.
He called for robust coordination and integration among institutions and stakeholders to ensure long-term sustainability.
The conference provided a platform for collaboration between academia, industry, and research organizations, fostering partnerships to drive national development and address the SDGs in the post-COVID era.
