The African Union High Representative for Silencing the Gun, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has called on states in West Africa and the Sahel regions to make substantial investments in robust approaches to effectively tackle violent extremism and terrorism.
Dr Chambas emphasized the inadequacy of outdated measures in addressing the contemporary nature of the threats faced by the sub-region.
Speaking at a regional peacebuilding conference organized by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) as part of the Research and Action for Peace (REcAP) Network project in Accra, Dr Chambas highlighted the urgent need for significant funding to counter-terrorism.
He asserted, “The funding of African peace missions by the AU, ECOWAS, and other African representatives and mechanisms will be able to benefit from direct UN-accessed contributions to ensure reliable and dependable funding, making them more efficient.”
