Belgium has recognized the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as a significant and credible effort by Morocco and a promising foundation for a mutually acceptable solution. This stance was articulated in a joint declaration issued during the 3rd meeting of the Moroccan-Belgian High Joint Partnership Commission, held on Monday in Rabat, with Aziz Akhannouch, Head of Government, and Alexander De Croo, Belgian Prime Minister, serving as co-chairs.
The declaration emphasized Belgium's enduring support for the United Nations-led process aimed at achieving a just, enduring, and mutually acceptable political resolution for the involved parties. Prime Minister De Croo reiterated Belgium's commitment to this process during the meeting.
Furthermore, both parties affirmed the United Nations' exclusive role in the political process and reasserted their backing for UN Security Council resolution 2703 (2023). This resolution acknowledged the role and responsibility of the parties involved in seeking a realistic, pragmatic, and lasting political solution rooted in compromise.
The joint declaration reflects the ongoing dialogue and collaboration between Belgium and Morocco, underlining their shared commitment to advancing peace and stability in the region.
