Five Divisional Chiefs from the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality in the Western Region have issued a fervent appeal to the government and regulatory bodies overseeing the mining industry to urgently intervene and revitalize the Bogoso Prestea Mine.
At a press conference held in Himan, Nana Nteboah Prah IV, the Divisional Chief of Prestea Himan Traditional Area, accompanied by other Divisional Chiefs and elders from surrounding communities, expressed deep concern over the alleged detrimental actions of the current mine operators, Future Global Resources (FGR). They lamented the silence of government agencies and regulatory bodies, including the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Authority, Chamber of Mines, and Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in addressing the plight of the mine.
Highlighting the crucial role of the Bogoso Prestea Mine in the development of host communities, the Chiefs emphasized the need for immediate intervention to save the mine from collapse.
Nana Nteboah Prah IV recounted the lack of financial capacity and technological prowess demonstrated by FGR since taking over from Golden Star Resources Limited in 2021. He revealed that despite numerous requests, the company failed to provide any operational plans, leading to concerns among stakeholders.
The Chiefs underscored the urgency of the situation, citing increased security threats, economic downturn, rising unemployment, and a general decline in the well-being of the communities. They criticized the Minerals Commission for its delayed response to the crisis and demanded clarity on the purpose and outcome of the 120-day ultimatum issued to FGR.
In a call for swift action, Nana Nteboah Prah IV demanded a prompt response to their petition submitted to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. He urged the minister to convene a stakeholder meeting to address the FGR situation and involve traditional rulers in the decision-making process regarding the mine's future.
Furthermore, the Chiefs pledged their support for any credible investor willing to rejuvenate the Bogoso Prestea Mine, emphasizing the need for sustainable mining practices that prioritize local development and job creation.
In response, Mr. Enoch Kelly Koffie, Branch Union Chairman of the Bogoso Prestea Mine, expressed gratitude for the Chiefs' support and urged the government to prioritize the mine's revival for the benefit of workers and the surrounding communities.
The Chiefs' impassioned appeal underscores the pressing need for immediate intervention to safeguard the future of the Bogoso Prestea Mine and ensure the socio-economic well-being of its host communities.
