Bono East farmer loses 2,000 yam tubers to deliberate bush fire Plea for assistance: Ghana News

Abukari Abdul Latif, a farmer and teacher in the Kintampo South district of the Region, has faced a devastating loss of over 2,000 tubers of yam due to a deliberate bushfire.

Despite efforts to protect his farm with fire belts, the intentional nature of the fire has left him in shock and despair.

Expressing his frustration, Abdul Latif said, “I was shocked when I got here. The yams that got burnt are more than 2000 tubers, and I can't even send one tuber home. I know someone intentionally did this because a farm can't just catch fire.”

Facing financial strain with no savings and a family to support, Abdul Latif has appealed to the government for assistance.

The incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by farmers despite public awareness campaigns on bushfire dangers.

Highlighting the community's lack of firefighting equipment, Mr. Attah Kakra, a community fire volunteer, stated, “All the yam is burnt. We couldn't stop the fire. We don't have equipment.”

Leading Fireman Bafochal Ibrahim, assessed the damage, and suspected arson and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation.

He urged residents to collaborate to prevent tragedies caused by deliberate or negligent fires.
