Accra, Ghana – Democracy Hub, the Convenor of the #FixTheCountry movement and #Occupy JulorbiHouse protests has officially declared its intention to hold a picketing event throughout December, spanning from December 1 to December 31, 2023, at the Julorbi House in Accra.
The purpose of this gathering is to address the concerns and frustrations with the current state of governance and leadership in Ghana. Democracy Hub has outlined its stance, which they believe reflects issues related to incompetence, a lack of integrity, routine abuse of power, and greed within the country.
The organization is particularly troubled by the persistently high levels of youth unemployment, the extensive economic mismanagement, which has pushed nearly one million Ghanaians into poverty, and the deteriorating state of press freedom.
Furthermore, the group has expressed concerns about extra-judicial killings and the persecution of activists advocating for democratic reforms.
The protest, aptly themed “#Occupy JulorbiHouse” and #JustResign, carries two significant demands. Firstly, it will call for the immediate resignation of the President of Ghana.
Alternatively, it calls for the president's impeachment by Parliament. Additionally, the organizers are urging the swift prosecution of corrupt officials, including individuals in the president's family and inner circle, who have allegedly contributed to what has been described as a “Friends, Family, and Concubines Government” by a former cabinet Minister.
This picketing event also aims to educate the public about the ongoing advocacy for a New Constitution for a New Generation. Democracy Hub believes that progressive Constitutional Reforms can provide a better framework for social equity and economic justice, as well as help to address abuses of power and impunity more effectively.
The demonstration will take place at the Jubilee House, specifically on the publicly accessible side facing Liberation Street.
Democracy Hub is committed to maintaining a peaceful and organized event. To this end, the organization will establish and publish detailed picketing guidelines to ensure a smooth and non-violent gathering. Information sessions will be conducted to educate the public about these guidelines.
