The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are set to convene today to discuss and deliberate on potential running mates for the party's flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in preparation for the 2024 election.
The primary focus of the meeting is to identify individuals who can effectively partner with Dr. Bawumia and contribute significantly to the party's success in the upcoming election.
Sources close to the discussions have mentioned notable figures, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Education Minister, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader, as strong contenders for the position.
The NEC will thoroughly deliberate on the merits and suitability of each candidate, considering their experience, expertise, and potential to complement Dr. Bawumia's strengths.
The finalized recommendation will then be presented to the National Council for formal approval.
This process aligns with the constitutional requirements of the NPP, which stipulate the selection of a running mate 12 months before a major election, provided the President is not the candidate.
As President Akufo-Addo is currently out of the country, Vice President Dr Bawumia will chair these crucial meetings.
