Enchi District Magistrate court grants bail to 66-year-old farmer accused of assault

The Enchi District Magistrate court has granted GH¢10,000 bail with two sureties to a 66-year-old farmer, Sampson Asiedu, who is facing charges of assault and threat of death.

Asiedu, pleading not guilty, received bail during the court proceedings presided over by Mr. Lawrence Buanor-Buer, with the case adjourned to Friday, January 12, 2024.

Police Detective Inspector Joseph Kwadwo Agyare, leading the prosecution, revealed that the complainant, Mr Kofi Morcher, is a teacher at New Yakasi, while the accused, Sampson Asiedu, resides at Apuja, both in the Aowin Municipality. Aboah Asiedu, a farmer, is identified as the victim and sibling of the complainant.

The incident revolves around a boundary dispute between Sampson Asiedu and his sibling, Aboah Asiedu, whose farms share a common boundary.

The disagreement escalated when Aboah confronted Sampson about the avocado tree branches extending onto his cocoa farm, causing shade and impacting the cocoa trees' growth.

Detective Inspector Agyare outlined the sequence of events, stating, “On November 21, 2023, around 0900 hours, Aboah went to Sampson's cottage at Apuja to inform him to cut the branches of his avocado tree covering his cocoa trees to enable him to have a better yield but met his absence.”

While Aboah left a message with Sampson's wife, Adwoa Manu, and proceeded to his farm nearby, Sampson confronted Aboah when he returned.

The disagreement escalated, resulting in Sampson allegedly assaulting Aboah.

According to Detective Inspector Agyare, “Sampson slapped Aboah in the face twice, making him fall to the ground and become restless but he managed to go home.” Aboah sought medical care at the Presbyterian clinic in Enchi after reporting the incident to the police.

Sampson was subsequently arrested on December 8, 2023, for questioning. In his caution statement, he denied the offence.
