In a closely contested election held at Adisadel College Park, Mr. Ernest Arthur, the Mayor of Cape Coast, clinched victory to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forthcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections for Cape Coast South.
The race, which recorded 579 votes, witnessed enthusiastic supporters celebrating the Mayor's win even before the final count.
Mayor Arthur secured 290 votes, narrowly surpassing Theodora Sarah Afful, the Central Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency, who polled 279 votes. Mr. James Brew-Wartemberg garnered nine votes.
With this victory, Mr. Arthur is set to face the three-term Member of Parliament, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The election, conducted under heavy security, remained peaceful throughout, with one vote being rejected.
Mayor Arthur, in his post-election remarks, emphasized the need for unity and peace among supporters, acknowledging the evident division among them.
He pledged to bridge the gaps and urged his supporters to celebrate with moderation in preparation for the larger contest in 2024.
Madam Theodora Sarah Afful, despite falling short in the election, expressed satisfaction with her performance.
She commended the delegates for their support and called for collaboration among supporters of all candidates to secure victory in the upcoming parliamentary polls. She emphasized the importance of compromise after every contest.
Madam Caroline Ewusi, the Cape Coast South Chairperson of the NPP, extended an invitation to all party supporters to work together for success in the 2024 elections.
She expressed optimism about the party's chances, emphasizing the need for an issue-based campaign to showcase the NPP's achievements during its administration.
