Mr Nicholas Osei-Wusu, a Broadcast Journalist vying for the position of assembly member for the Nintin electoral area in the Asante Mampong municipality, has outlined plans to elevate the community to become a prominent destination for organic banana trade in Ghana.
Nintin, recognized as the hub of banana trade in the Ashanti region, is strategically located after the famous Mampong Scarp along the Kumasi-Mampong Highway, where women predominantly engage in banana trading.
Mr Osei-Wusu, who is currently a Regional Correspondent of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in the Ashanti region, emphasized his commitment to ensuring that women in the town benefit significantly from the banana trade.
Speaking at a campaign platform, he expressed his vision to promote Nintin as the preferred destination in Ghana for organic bananas, drawing parallels with Akomadan's association with tomatoes.
The aspiring assembly member sees this initiative as an avenue to create wealth and economic empowerment for women, enhancing their household incomes. He believes that positioning Nintin as a prominent organic banana trade centre will attract increased patronage from across the country.
In addition to his focus on the banana trade, Mr. Osei-Wusu addressed pressing issues such as water shortage, poor sanitation, and health concerns affecting the residents.
He pledged to collaborate with local leaders and relevant authorities to address the acute water shortage by exploring options such as extending pipe-borne water from Mampong or identifying alternative reliable water sources.
On the matter of poor sanitation and open defecation, Mr Osei-Wusu vowed to intensify efforts in collaboration with the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Water and Sanitation program.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the health concerns related to insect bites affecting residents and proposed collaboration with health and environmental authorities to identify and address the root cause.
To ensure participatory governance, Mr Osei-Wusu committed to holding periodic meetings with the communities and opinion leaders, seeking their input on key issues to be presented at assembly meetings for consideration.
If elected, he aims to bring about positive change and development in the Nintin electoral area.
