The President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines (GCM), Joshua Mortoti, has called on the government to implement policies that facilitate the growth of the mining industry.

Speaking at the 9th Ghana Mining Industry Awards (GMIA) in , Mortoti emphasized the need for policies that promote sectoral growth, urging the government to avoid political influences.

The GMIA event celebrated outstanding achievements and excellence in the mining industry, with 23 individuals and organizations awarded in various categories.

Notably, Gold Ridge Akyem Mine received the Mining Company of the Year Award, and former GCM President Eric Asubonteng was honored as the Mining Personality of the Year.

Mortoti urged the government to reassess the mining fiscal tax regime, particularly in exploration. He emphasized the importance of government investment in exploration and incentivizing the private sector to engage in it.

Mortoti highlighted the potential benefits the country could derive from its abundant mineral resources through strategic investment in exploration.

“We cannot continue to leave the exploration of our mineral resources in the hands of private entities and expect to have most of the benefits when commercial finds are made,” Mortoti stated.

He also expressed concerns about the Growth and Stabilization Levy, stating that it could jeopardize the operations of some mines and disrupt expected cash flows, impacting state revenue objectives and employment.

Despite these concerns, Mortoti reiterated the GCM's commitment to supporting the government in achieving . He encouraged deeper collaboration between the government and the mining industry to formulate mutually beneficial policies for growth.

The awards not only recognized outstanding achievements but also emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable and innovative practices in shaping the future of the industry, Mortoti noted.

The CEO of GCM, Dr. Sulemanu Koney, urged mining companies to integrate innovation, efficiency, environmental stewardship, and people-centered policies into their operations. He emphasized the need for mining benefits to trickle down to citizens, especially in local communities, for present and future generations.

David Johnson, Director of Communications and External Relations at , expressed excitement about the award, stating that it would motivate Newmont to contribute more to host communities, the company, and the government.
