The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has disclosed plans to temporarily shut down one of its treatment plants at Kpong, serving the Krobo-Somanya area in the Eastern Region. The shutdown is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, February 14, 2024, to Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Essential service providers, such as hospitals and schools in the affected area, have been advised to ensure they have sufficient water storage during the shutdown period.
The temporary closure is necessary for the installation of a new interconnection pipeline and foot valves at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant. This upgrade aims to boost the plant's capacity by approximately 3 million gallons per day.
Engineers will work diligently within the estimated timeframe to restore water supply to the affected communities. The shutdown aligns with GWCL's commitment to enhancing water supply capacity in the Eastern and Greater Accra Regions to meet the growing population's demands.
Affected communities, including Somanya, the entire Krobo area, and surrounding areas, are urged to bear with the inconvenience during the shutdown period. GWCL has assured the public that alternative arrangements have been made to mitigate the impact of the interruption.
Consumers are encouraged to inform community leaders, assemblymen, and unit committee members in case of emergencies during the shutdown. GWCL management expresses regret for any inconvenience caused and appeals for understanding as the upgrade project aims to improve services for the public.
