Nigerian prosecutors have introduced 14 new criminal charges, including forgery, against former central bank governor Godwin Emefiele in what has become the most high-profile case during President 's tenure.

Emefiele, who served as the central bank governor for nine years, resigned last year after spending five months in detention following his arrest.

The new charges, presented in Abuja, involve allegations of forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery and felony, procurement fraud, and criminal breach of trust.

Emefiele, initially facing six charges of procurement fraud, was released on $300,000 bail in November and denied the accusations.

The former central bank governor is set to be indicted on the amended charges on Friday, where he is also expected to enter a plea.

Emefiele was suspended by President Tinubu on June 9, arrested the following day by the Department of State Service, and subsequently resigned in August.

His resignation paved the way for the appointment of Olayemi Cardoso as the new central bank governor in September.
