Green Ghana Day set to plant 10 million seedlings

The highly anticipated is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Friday, June 9, 2023, throughout the country with the aim of planting 10 million seedlings.

President Nana Addo Dankwa launched the Green Ghana Day in 2021 under the Ministry of as part of a robust afforestation and reforestation agenda implemented by the government.

The initiative seeks to restore the country's depleted forest cover, which has suffered from illegal small-scale mining and timber logging.

The inaugural edition aimed to plant five million trees but surpassed expectations by planting over seven million seedlings. In 2022, more than 26 million trees were planted, surpassing the 20 million target.

The official launch of this year's Green Ghana Day took place on Wednesday, May 17, at the , officiated by the , .

The called on all well-meaning Ghanaians to support the tree planting exercise, emphasizing that the Day provides an opportunity for Ghanaians to demonstrate and commitment to protecting the country's forest cover, leaving a greener and more prosperous Ghana for future generations.

He stressed the importance of collective action and urged the public to support the government's efforts in addressing these environmental challenges.

In support of the cause, the pledged to lead his chiefs and people in planting 2.5 million trees to safeguard the enclave of Lake in the Bosomtwe District of the .

Since 2017, the government has implemented various measures to restore the country's depleted forest cover, making the a crucial intervention to raise national awareness about the need for collective action in restoring degraded landscapes.

The program also aims to instil values of tree planting and nurturing among citizens, particularly the younger generation, to mitigate the adverse effects of and enhance the beauty of the environment.

Survival rates of the seedlings planted in previous years have been promising, with an average of more than 81 percent survival in 2021 and 72 percent survival in 2022, indicating the positive impact of these afforestation efforts.
