Ms. Dzifa Bampoh, the Corporate Communication Manager of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has revealed that the company is contemplating the complete replacement of its Sogakope Substation due to its submergence during the Akosombo Dam spillage floods.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema, Ms Bampoh explained that GRIDCo engineers had initiated assessments on the substation as floodwaters were gradually receding. She also mentioned that once the water had completely receded, transformers at the substation would require disassembly, drying, and assessment to determine the extent of damage and the need for replacement.
Ms. Bampoh stated, “Now it's almost like we have to replace everything.”
The Corporate Communication Manager highlighted that the submersion of underground cables, electrical relays, and metering systems inside the substation control led to GRIDCo's decision to perform an emergency shutdown a few weeks ago. This shutdown was a preventive measure to avoid electrocution and safeguard the lives of both the public and GRIDCo workers.

Despite these challenges, Ms Bampoh noted that the company had initiated power distribution to the affected area through its Angloga substation, albeit with a smaller capacity compared to the Sogakope substation.
