Ho Municipal Assembly aims to collect GH₵6 million in local revenue by December 2024: Ghana News

The Municipal Assembly is targeting a total of GH₵6 million from various local revenue sources by the end of December 2024, according to statements made during a meeting with internal transport operators in the municipality.

The estimated revenue for the year includes GH₵651,250 from property rates, GH₵950,020.97 from lands and royalties, and GHC2,147,503.03 from property rentals.

Various licensing regimes are projected to contribute GH₵1,272,064.82, while fees and tolls from commercial activities are expected to bring in GH₵1,251,227.26. Additionally, penalties and revenues, including those from forests, are estimated to total GH₵131,056.00.

This figure represents nearly double the GH₵4.5 million targeted for 2023, indicating an ambitious goal for the Municipal Assembly.

Mr. Dickson Agbenya, the Budget Analyst, outlined the revenue strategies, emphasizing the intensification of rent collection for facilities, property rates, and licensing.

He also mentioned plans to regulate the activities of scrap dealers and address challenges to revenue targets through stakeholder education.

“We are not going to leave any stone unturned. Even we are planning to meet with scrap dealers and regulate their activities,” Mr. Agbenya stated.

Despite challenges in revenue collection, Mr. Divine Bosson, the Municipal Chief Executive, expressed the Assembly's commitment to judiciously using public revenue.

He pointed to various ongoing projects in the municipality as encouraging signs that stakeholders would willingly contribute to revenue generation.

Mr. Agbenya highlighted the importance of educating the public about the use of revenue, stating, “The challenge is people do not actually understand that they need to pay their rent and fees. We do a lot, but people seem not to be aware.”

In November 2023, the Assembly achieved about 90 percent of its GH₵4.75 million revenue target for the year, indicating a positive trend in revenue collection.
