The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has voiced concerns over the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) handling of recent power outages nationwide, citing discrepancies in its public announcements.
Despite assurances from the government and ECG that there is no load shedding, attributing the situation to technical issues such as the restoration of overloaded power transformers, the IES has criticized ECG's statements as misleading.
In a statement released by its Executive Director, Nana Amoasi VII, the IES expressed shock at ECG's assertion of a “stable national power supply” and “stable national grid,” both of which it claims are non-existent in the current power sub-sector.
The IES questioned ECG's ability to ensure stable power supply when it has been receiving less than 85% of the required power from GRIDCo since the beginning of the year. Additionally, it highlighted GRIDCo's silence on the matter, suggesting that the system operator should be the authoritative voice on issues of power supply and grid stability.
The IES condemned ECG's public relations efforts as unwarranted, stating that they risk damaging the institution's reputation and credibility. It urged for transparency and accountability in addressing the challenges facing Ghana's power sector.
