The Chief Fisherman of Apewosika, Nana Kojo Opoku, has appealed to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, to address challenges in the fishing industry if he wins the 2024 Presidential elections.
Nana Opoku raised concerns about various issues affecting fishermen and the need for government interventions.
Speaking at a town hall meeting during former President Mahama's two-day Building Ghana Tour of the Western Region, Nana Opoku highlighted the discomfort faced by fishermen due to operational challenges.
He reminisced about favourable conditions for fishermen during the NDC's previous tenure and emphasized the importance of effective interventions.
Nana Opoku specifically addressed the non-functionality of landing sites on their beaches and urged for the establishment of a fishing port to revitalize the industry.
He also expressed worry about the insufficient supply of Pre-mix fuel, a critical resource for fishing expeditions.
Acknowledging the positive impact of Mr. Mahama's first term in office on the Fisheries Industry, Nana Opoku noted the provision of outboard motors to fishers.
However, he highlighted the current challenges and called for renewed attention to the sector.
The Chief of Apewosika, Nana Kofi Sibo II, thanked former President Mahama for previous policies benefiting the Fisheries sector.
He specifically addressed concerns about the sale of pre-mix fuel and outboard motors in secrecy and called for transparency.
Additionally, Nana Kofi Sibo II appealed to Mahama for the asphalting of Apewosika town roads if he was elected.
The Member of Parliament for Evaloe-Adjomoro Gwira, Mr Kofi Arko NoKoe, assured the fishing community that Mahama would prioritize and address issues in the fishing industry.
In response, former President Mahama assured the Apewosika community that his government, if elected, would modernize the town and respond to the needs of fishermen by streamlining activities in the fishing industry.
The visit also included a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of Lower Axim, Awulae Attibrukusu, who appealed for a new bus for Axim Girls Senior High School and highlighted concerns about the distribution of pre-mix fuel among fishermen.
Awulae Attibrukusu urged Mahama to help regulate the distribution for the benefit of all fishers.
