MoGCSP warns of rising human trafficking due to economic benefits to traffickers

The , Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has issued a warning regarding the increasing incidence of human trafficking worldwide, driven by its economic advantages for traffickers.

Mrs. Francisca Oteng Mensah, Deputy Minister of the MoGCSP, delivered the caution during an interview with the (GNA) on the sidelines of a community dialogue on social protection and social issues held in Yamfo, a mining community in the Tano North Municipality of the Region.

She advised Ghanaian youths aspiring to travel abroad to exercise patience and obtain the necessary travel documents to avoid exposing themselves to traffickers who engage in the illicit trade of human organs. Unsuspecting victims often suffer severe human rights abuses at the hands of traffickers.

Mrs. Mensah expressed concern over reported cases of human trafficking involving innocent Ghanaian victims, particularly young women who become targets for traffickers and are exploited for commercial and domestic sex work in various parts of the world.

While the Ministry is engaged in public education efforts to combat this issue, the desire of youth to travel abroad has posed challenges to government efforts.

Nevertheless, she acknowledged that the nation has made significant progress in rescuing and reintegrating trafficking victims.

She praised the collaborative support from and NGOs in operating shelter homes and called on all stakeholders to help minimize the activities of human traffickers.

Mrs. Mensah stressed that aiding human trafficking is an offense punishable by law, and the Ministry is committed to arresting and prosecuting offenders.

Dr. , Minister of and Member of (MP) for Tano North, emphasized the crucial role of community leaders, chiefs, and queens in addressing human trafficking.

She urged families and parents to discourage their relatives from traveling abroad without proper travel documents.

Nana Appiah Afrane, Sanaahene of the Yamfo Traditional Area, commended the MoGCSP and the MP for their efforts and called for intensified sensitization to further educate the public about human trafficking.
