The chiefs and elders of Tontokrom, a community in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region, have pledged to collaborate with Asanko Gold Ghana Limited. This commitment was made during a meeting facilitated by Mr George Mireku Duker, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, aimed at resolving recent clashes between residents and security personnel from the company.
Mr Duker emphasized the significance of dialogue in resolving conflicts and urged both parties to take responsibility for their actions, condemning the violent clashes. He encouraged the community to fulfil its obligations to the company while advocating for Asanko Gold to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to enhance the welfare of residents.
Assuring the company of government support, Mr. Duker affirmed the Ministry's commitment to ensuring smooth operations and providing adequate security for concessions. He called upon Asanko Gold to establish sustainable relationships with the community through CSR projects and engagement with indigenous people.
Addressing the community, Mr Duker urged elders to guide the youth and promote dialogue in addressing grievances, condemning encroachment on the company's concession. He reassured the community of government plans to introduce a Community Mining Scheme, emphasizing adherence to mining laws.
Expressing gratitude for government intervention, the management of Asanko Gold pledged to implement Ministry proposals to foster cordial relations with host communities.
