Obuasi East District empowers Persons with Disabilities for economic independence: Ghana News

The Obuasi East District Assembly has taken a significant step towards empowering Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by providing them with various items and financial support.

This initiative, funded from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), allocated three percent of its resources to support PWDs in the district.

Seventeen selected PWDs received these empowering resources in a ceremony that included items such as deep freezers, fufu pounding machines, cosmetics and toiletries, water pumping machines, welding machines, bags of charcoal, maize, and more.

The beneficiaries had previously requested these resources to help establish their businesses.

Madam Faustina Amissah, the District Chief Executive (DCE), presented the items on behalf of the Assembly.

She emphasized that these funds were designated to alleviate economic hardships faced by PWDs as part of an inclusive governance approach.

The DCE encouraged the beneficiaries to make effective use of these resources to enhance their living conditions, assuring them that a monitoring team would assess their progress.

Furthermore, the DCE mentioned that the Assembly was still processing a backlog of applications, which would be addressed as funds became available.

Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom, the Member of (MP), reminded the PWDs that their constitutional rights were equally protected as any other Ghanaian citizen.

He encouraged them to participate in the democratic process by exercising their civic responsibilities, emphasizing that they had the power to engage in decision-making and contribute to public office.

He particularly encouraged them to stand for upcoming , highlighting the progress made in making public facilities more disability-friendly within the constituency.

Mr. Kwame Ankrah, President of the Obuasi Chapter of the Ghana Federation of the Disability Organisation, expressed gratitude for the prompt disbursement of funds by the Assembly, praising this action in support of PWDs.
